A police officer has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her nine-month-old baby.
It’s believed the former couple were arguing about the child’s paternity.
The cop, a Constable with the Flying Squad Unit, allegedly attacked his former lover at her home at Fountainhead Village in Blue Downs on Sunday evening after finding out the baby was not his.
It’s believed the 36-year-old officer grabbed the little girl by the legs and slammed her against the pavement.
The baby survived the attack and is being treated at Red Cross Hospital.
A source close to the investigation tells the Daily Voice the accused “was upset after finding out the baby was not his after the woman broke up with him”.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says: “The 36-year-old constable was arrested on [Sunday] on a charge of attempted murder after assaulting his 37-year-old ex-girlfriend and a nine-month-old child on the same day.”
The accused, whose name is known to the Daily Voice, is expected to appear at the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court today.
Shocked residents in the area say the incident happened in full view.
A resident, who did not wish to be identified, tells the Daily Voice: “In his hand he had an axe, he wanted to use it on the baby before he was stopped by other people.
“They had apparently been arguing from Saturday evening already and he left and came back the Sunday only to attack them.”
