Trains have been re-routed after acts of vandalism by housing protesters to track boxes and signals caused Langa station to be shut down.
Yesterday morning, small groups of protesters stoned passing trains and damaged railway lines after placing concrete slabs and burning rubble on the lines to stop commuters from going to work.
Metrorail’s Riana Scott says several track boxes, signals and apparatus cases were damaged.
She says the Langa station and Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa official vehicles were also stoned during the riots.
The vandalism affects the Central line that services both the Khayelitsha line and Mitchells Plain.
As a result, no trains are able to operate in that area. But Scott says they have managed to find an alternative route to get people home. She explains trains on platform 16 and 20 will take commuters to Bellville where they will catch connecting trains.
“No single tickets will be on sale to the affected areas until the situation normalises and scheduled services can resume,” she says.
Commuters on the Central and Northern Lines are warned to expect longer travel times today.
