Two shoppers were wounded during a brazen robbery at a Cape Flats mall yesterday.
Three skelms were targeting Cash Crusaders at the KCT Mall in Khayelitsha.
The robbers stormed the store shortly before 12pm and demanded cash.
As they fled, they fired random shots, wounding two people.
One of the suspects was arrested.
When the Daily Voice arrived at the mall, the area around Cash Crusaders and Shoprite had been cordoned off by police and people were not allowed to access certain shops.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says three suspects entered the store and threatened a staff member with a gun.
“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects fired shots randomly as they left the scene and wounded two unidentified victims. The victims were transported to hospital for medical treatment,” she says.
Car guard, Xolile Makawula, says he got a big skrik when he heard the gunshots.
“I was standing here by the cars and just heard the shots. Yoh! I was shocked to see the people come running out and screaming, trying to get away.
“I heard they caught one guy and stabbed him,” he says.
Rwexana confirms that a 25-year-old man was arrested and says he will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once charged.
Shortly after 1pm, police could be seen leaving the scene, but the doors to Cash Crusaders remained closed.
A blood trail could be seen at the entrance to the store.
Cash Crusaders spokesperson, Alaine Rossouw, says none of their staff were injured in the attack.
“In line with standard protocol for an incident like this, all the staff will receive trauma counselling. The store will be open tomorrow. Crime won’t deter our operations,” she says.
KCT Mall management did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.
Rwexana says police are investigating a business robbery and attempted murder cases.
