Geronimo de Klerk is making a big impact in Elsies River by giving the community a chance to feed themselves through his organisation, Feed the Future.
The 18-year-old began planning his organisation last April and in June launched his first project which has led to two community vegetable gardens.
“Growing up here, I have witnessed how people have gone hungry while they lack the knowledge and employment to empower themselves, this is why I started Feed the Future,” he says.
He says the organisation’s purpose is to make sure that the future of Elsies River is filled with people who are able to sustain themselves.
“The vegetables we harvest are donated to the local feeding schemes and we also make up boxes for pensioners in the area.
“The guys that work at the gardens are all unemployed youths so not only do they get a chance to help feed the community, but they also learn skills that can get them employment.
“My dream is to be able to supply local stores and restaurants which will create jobs for the people in the area and surrounds.”
Geronimo has a garden at his home at Trinity Place flats in St Dominic Street while there is also a garden at Edward Primary School in Owen Street, where vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage and beetroot are grown.
There are plans to start more gardens but he says he would need to apply to the council first.
