A 14-year-old girl was also injured during the gunfire at the weekend in Belhar.
Police also confiscated the 24-year-old’s firearm.
Cops say they came under attack and opened fire on the suspect, wounding him in the leg.
When police carried out an investigation, they learnt he is the alleged leader of a well-known gang in the area and confiscated his firearm.
During the shootout, a teenage girl who had been a bystander, suffered a wound to her body.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) was called to the scene.
The man is expected to appear in court soon.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms the arrest: “He is believed to be a well-known gang leader in the area.
“He has been taken to hospital under police guard.
“The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
“A 14-year-teenage girl who was a bystander sustained a gunshot during the shootout.”
