The father suspected of killing his three-year-old twins at his Hout Bay home is currently in hospital after allegedly sustaining stab wounds.
According to police sources, the man’s ex-wife stabbed him after he tried to attack her.
Other sources said the suspect was receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during a stabbing incident while in police custody.
Police spokesman, André Traut, would not comment on any of the allegations.
“I can’t elaborate on the nature of the injury or how or when it occurred, but I can confirm we have arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with the deaths of two toddlers. He remains under police guard in hospital,” Traut said.
The suspect was arrested in Wynberg on Thursday evening — after fleeing the murder scene in his estranged wife’s vehicle.
Traut said yesterday that the father - who lives in Spain but flew into Cape Town two weeks ago to visit his three young children — will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates' Court today, on two charges of murder and one of theft of a motor vehicle.
The suspect and the twins’ mother were divorced in 2015.
The couple - who had previously lived in Spain - also have a seven-year-old son, who also lives with his mother.
She found the bodies of the toddlers — a boy and a girl — when she went to fetch them from their father’s holiday residence on Princess Road on Thursday.
Family spokesman, Juan Smuts, told the Weekend Argus that the father - who cannot be named until he makes a formal court appearance — was scheduled to fly out of South Africa on Thursday night, after visiting his children.
The mother had relocated to South Africa from Spain in 2012.
