People, who caught an alleged rapist in the act, tied his penis to a pole and hit it with sticks.
On Monday, residents of Valhalla Park allegedly found the man raping a 10-year-old girl in his shack in the 8ste Laan informal settlement.
Mense went berserk and nearly moered the man to death.
A video of the mob justice attack shows the man being dragged out of a shack; he is beaten up and his penis tied to a pole, before residents repeatedly hit it with planks.
The man is dressed in only a T-shirt, and his mouth is bebloed from the beating.
In the two-minute video, a laaitie is also seen kicking the ou in the head.
The man’s life is spared when his family arrive on the scene with police in tow.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, confirmed the incident but says the man refused to lay a charge against his attackers.
“This office can confirm an incident in Valhalla Park where the community assaulted a male person,” says Traut.
“It is alleged by the community that he sexually assaulted a child, but police has no record of any sexual cases in Valhalla Park or any rape suspect who is sought.
“The victim was taken to hospital by the family with the assistance of SAPS and he refused to open a case.
“We are looking into the circumstances surrounding the matter.”
Robert Brown, Community Empowerment and Development chairman in Bishop Lavis, says mense are gatvol of child molesters and perpetrators need to take responsibility for their actions.
“I saw the video and the community is fed up,” says Robert.
“The perpetrator was found with his pants down on the young girl and the community dragged him out of his shack.
“The community is furious and frustrated. We are asking the minister, mayor, premier and safety and security to stand with communities during these times. The residents want the death penalty back.”
Yesterday marked the 22nd anniversary of the abolishment of the death penalty in South Africa.
“As a community, we are saying enough is enough. Since the death of Lekita Moore last year this community has been angered,” adds Robert.
The body of Lekita, 18, was found mutilated on a field in 8ste Laan. Cameron Wilson is on trial for her rape and murder.
A resident, who did not want to be named, warns they will take the law into their own hands.
“There will not be another Lekita Moore. We won’t hesitate to kill to protect our own.
“The community and even its gangsters will not tolerate such injustice against our women and children.”
The family of the 10-year-old victim could not be reached by the time of going to press.
