Police divers were called to Sea Point on Sunday after the body of an unknown woman was found floating on the boundary of Sea Point Swimming Pool.
Mayco member for Community Services and Health Zahid Badroodien says the shocking discovery was made by lifeguards as they arrived at work on Sunday morning.
“City lifeguards discovered the body of an unidentified female on the shore outside the boundaries of Sea Point Swimming Pool this morning.
“They were on patrol in the area at the time, and summoned emergency services who are currently on scene.”
Badroodien explains that the cause of death was unknown as the scene was handed over to police divers who extracted the body from the water.
“There are no further details available at this stage about the circumstances surrounding the incident.The South African Police Service is investigating. The body was floating off-shore when it was discovered.”
Rescue workers could be seen on the shoreline adjacent to the swimming pool where the woman’s body was brought ashore shortly before 1pm.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the incident and says the case is being investigated by Sea Point police.
“A death inquest case will be opened by Sea Point police after a body of an unidentified African woman was found this morning.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” she says.
Last Tuesday the bodies of two men believed to be maintenance workers were recovered from a sewage pit behind a hotel at the V&A Waterfront.
At the time Rwexana said the bodies were of two men, aged 22 and 52, who have yet to be identified.
