Just two days after being officially charged with the rape of an 18-year-old boy, the convicted paedophile Brian Shofer has committed suicide.
Shofer was found hanging in his cell at the Lentegeur police station on Friday.
According to a police source, it is believed that he used a mattress lining to hang himself.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed that a 58-year-old man had been found dead and that the matter would be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
Shofer made headlines this week after news broke that the convicted paedophile had advertised private tutoring for children on Gumtree, claiming to be a "very experienced tutor who is available every day to help your child/children with their problem subjects" and offering "100%" pass rates.
Schofer was arrested this week for allegedly raping a boy between 2010 and 2016, after his 70-year-old landlord spotted his notorious tenant on the front page of the Daily Voice.
The victim, who is now 18, was 12 when the accused allegedly first assaulted him.
It was also reported that Schofer has been teaching at at Cape Flats school as early as last term.
Shofer’s sexual assault convictions date back to 1994.
His first victims, mainly from Mitchells Plain, were aged between seven and 14.
He paroled but re-offended after setting up a youth centre in Hanover Park.
He was released from jail in 2010 and was living in London Village in Mitchells Plain at the time of his arrest.
