John Cena will officially retire from WWE on 13 December
The 17-time world champion, whose remarkable journey has transcended the wrestling ring into Hollywood, will conclude his career with a highly anticipated match at Saturday Night's Main Event this year.
Speaking candidly to PEOPLE magazine, Cena shared his rationale for stepping away from the squared circle.
He said: "Age plays a factor. I'm not as strong or as fast as I used to be.
“I made a promise when I started gaining some notoriety that when I'm a step slower, I will go, because there will be kids just as hungry as I was who have earned a shot to see if they can make it."
As he gears up for his upcoming match against United States Champion Logan Paul, Cena has also been unexpectedly vocal about his opponent, labelling him as "underrated."
While Paul often divides opinions among fans, Cena believes he has the potential to become a world champion, stating, "He’s not an outsider. He belongs in WWE." This reflects Cena's belief that emerging talent deserve recognition and opportunities to shine.
Cena will also take to the ring at next week's Clash In Paris, emphasising that he is not taking Paul lightly.
Drawing from his recent victory over Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, Cena revealed that this experience "reignited a fire" within him, reaffirming his commitment to preparation and focus. Looking to go out with a bang, Cena said: "I can tell you I’m not looking past Logan Paul.
"Will he have to earn every inch? Absolutely."
While the identity of Cena's final opponent remains under wraps, speculation suggests it could be a rising star like Gunther or Bron Breakker.
Wrestling legend Bully Ray weighed in on Cena's farewell match, positing that it might be fitting for Cena to lose, as it could dramatically impact the future of a younger competitor. Speaking to Busted Open Radio, he said: "What one person in the WWE can benefit the most for their future in a final match against John Cena?" he queried, hinting at the significance of Cena's last match.
As Cena prepares for his final chapter in WWE, fans around the world are bracing for an emotional farewell to a man who has become synonymous with the spirit and tenacity of professional wrestling.
