A man believed to be in his forties tragically lost his life on Wednesday morning after he was hit by a train at the railway in Nyanga Junction.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased are under investigation by Manenberg police.

The body of the deceased was seen lying on the train tracks next to the Caltex petrol station in Nyanga Junction.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed an inquest is under investigation.

Van Wyk reported “Manenberg police registered an inquest following the death of an unidentified male in his 40’s who was knocked by a train, on the train line direction Cape Town, just next to Caltex in Nyanga junction.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”

A spokesperson for the Western Cape Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) confirmed that the matter is under investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragic death comes a week after The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) unveiled its Annual State of Safety Report (ASoSR) for the 2024/25 reporting period showing that 81 people died and 336 injured in rail related incidents.

The Western Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga collectively reported the majority of fatalities and injuries.

Two weeks ago, the Daily Voice reported the death of a 35-year-old man after he was struck by a train near Van Der Stel train station in Strand.

Train operations between Cape Town and Strand had to be temporarily suspended.
