THE community of Belhar is die hel in after learning that the uncle of alleged gun smuggler Wanay Farao gave a statement to cops that they say is full of lies.

Farao is currently applying for bail at the Wynberg Magistrates Court, where she’s facing charges of premeditated murder linked to the killing of a former taxi owner at the same court on 8 April, alongside four co-accused.

In shocking details from the court documents, Farao’s own uncle told police that she hadn’t lived in her childhood home for three years, claimed she was a sex worker and added that he doesn’t want her back if she gets bail.

But the community who have known Wanay since she was a meisie say they got a moerse skrik when they read about the allegations in the Daily Voice, and are now fighting back, saying the uncle is spreading lies.

The Daily Voice spoke to Belhar mense, including Wanay’s grandmother Patricia Klaasen.

Klaasen says: “When SAPS came to look for Wanay’s parents for a statement that time [her aunt] sent [Wanay’s mom] upstairs because they knew it was the detectives. [The aunty and uncle] spoke to the detectives without [Wanay’s mom] knowing and went behind her back.”

She added that the 23-year-old told her she met her berk and co-accused, Brian Booysen, at a jol in town, and only met the alleged mastermind, Shireen Matthews after they were arrested.

Other aunties in the area also came forward to support Wanay, saying she is soft-spoken, polite, and has never been disrespectful.

They added: “The whole community is praying for Wanay as they know who she is.”

Even her childhood bestie, Miché, was geskok by the claims.

Miché says: “I was shocked when I read that Wanay was a sex worker because she always had a stable job and honest income after she matriculated.”

Farao and Matthew’s bail hearing continues in Wynberg’s hof.
