OVER 500 mense from Bonteheuwel rallied together to to pray for an end the ongoing gang violence and to give thanks for the significant decline in gang-related murders in their area.

Church of the Nazarene district superintendent in the Western Cape Reginald Subjee told the Daily Voice that the church along with Sub-council 15 Chairperson and Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie agreed to have this special service.

Subjee says: “We said we need to come on board and work as a partnership to come together on how we can bring Bonteheuwel back to being a community that prays.

“It was an amazingly beautiful service, many other church groups from different denominations were there. We even had some friends from our Muslim faith as well.

“We believe that prayer can move the hand of God so that we can keep the peace and make a difference.

"We want Bonteheuwel to be a beacon of light to show it can be done, especially with all the gangsterism and the shootings that has been happening in Mitchells Plain and Valhalla Park. We needed to do something and this was our little effort.”

McKenzie said seeing people respond to the call for prayer reminded him that God has truly positioned Bonteheuwel in a place of light.

He added: “This gathering is not just a service – it’s a statement.

“While others complain and tear down, we choose to build up and pray – not just for Bonteheuwel, but for Bonteheuwel and beyond.”
