A GAUTENG couple on their way to the airport were nearly killed in a brazen ambush on the notorious “N2 Hell Run” after being tricked into thinking they had knocked over a child.

The man, who asked not to be named, told the Daily Voice the incident happened on 13 July while they were heading from Somerset West to return a rental car before flying home.

He says: “Just as we approached the spot where the incident happened, I saw somebody jump up from the barrier on the left side of the highway coming towards us and the concrete block hit the car.

“The block came through the window and my wife was bending slightly forward to get her handbag and the block hit the headrest. The glass from the window had shattered and cut her face, her neck and her eyes.body.

“If the block hit my wife full on the head it would have crushed her skull and it would have killed her. About 30 seconds later, a car came up on our right-hand side and they were shouting at me saying that I killed a kid on the highway and that I must stop and they kept on repeating that.”

Realising it was a scam, the man kept driving, but the suspects weren’t done yet as the car tried to force them off the road.

He managed to swerve into the fast lane and sped off. The couple missed their flight and had to seek medical help, but later managed to catch another plane home.

His wife also had to see an eye specialist and is currently receiving treatment while her cuts are healing. b

However, they felt had there been signage and warnings the incident might have been prevented.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says: “Nyanga police are investigating an attempted murder following an incident on 13 July at about 4.15pm on the N2 direction Cape Town before Borchards Quarry Road, Nyanga area.

“According to reports the complainant was on his way to [the airport], when his vehicle was struck by an object on the passenger side hitting his wife in the passenger seat...”
