A HOMELESS Heideveld man who was known for helping mense was shot dead while sleeping in a car that he looked after on Wednesday morning.
His brother Shawn Petersen, who described him as “a sheriff”, told the Daily Voice that the way in which his brother Sharief Petersen was killed was uncalled for.
Sharief was found dead with his hands in his pockets and his brother believes he was not the intended target. Shawn says the suspects skiet enige mens that they suspect of smokkeling.
A grieving Petersen said of his brother’s death: “It’s a sad thing that happened but it is done. He was like a sheriff picking up papers and doing what he can to keep going because he was homeless.
“It was a sad thing that happened and was unnecessary, but that is the way life is at the end of the day.
“We cannot say why, but God already said it must be like this and we leave it up to Him at the end of the day.”
Shawn said Sharief was sleeping in the car he was watching it for one of the mechanics in the area.
Petersen added that his brother’s memory will live on as the family are preparing his janazah.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reports: “Manenberg police registered a murder case for investigation after the body of a 55 year old male was found inside a vehicle in Zuurberg Street, Heideveld on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, at about 7.30am.
“The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his body and was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and arrests are yet to be made.”
Twigg added that Manenberg detectives are investigating a case of murder.
In a unrelated incident, a 50-year-old foreigner male succumbed to his injuries in hospital after he was stabbed by another 37-year-old foreigner male suspect around 1.00am in Tambo Village, Manenberg.
