IT WAS a bloody weekend for various communities, as mass shootings were reported across the Mother City.
On Friday evening unknown suspects opened fire in a drive-by shooting on six youngsters between the ages of 17 and 21 years which resulted in five people being shot and wounded and a sixth male managed to escape the onslaught unharmed.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that Kleinvlei police registered six counts of attempted murder following the shooting incident at about 6:15pm in Palmiet Street, Electric City, Eerste River.
“According to reports a yellow Hyundai i10 drove up to the victims and the occupants opened fire on them,” Twigg reported.
“The victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation.”
In a separate incident, three men were shot and killed in Philippi by gunmen masked as police officers on Saturday morning.
Colonel Andre Traut said that detectives from the Serious and Violent Crime Unit have launched an investigation into three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder following a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, 26 July 2025 at around 2am.
“Preliminary reports indicate that two unknown suspects approached a residence in Hankomo Street, Lower Crossroads, Philippi East, identified themselves as police officers, and claimed to be looking for something,” he reported.
“The suspects then opened fire on the occupants of the house. Two men, aged 19 and 20, as well as a 20-year-old woman, were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
“A fourth victim, a 26-year-old woman, sustained gunshot wounds to her arms and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined, and the suspects remain at large.”
