TRIBUTES are pouring in for Portland High School matric learner Abdul Muizz Diedericks who was gunned down on Saturday afternoon in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain.

Muizz, 18 was shot and killed in Judo Street when he was approached by unknown gunmen around 3pm.

Muizz’s father told Daily Voice that the family is shattered by the loss, as the teen was preparing to sit for his National Senior Certificate exams.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Mitchells Plain detectives are investigating a murder case.

Twigg reported: “Mitchells Plain police attended to a complaint of a shooting on Saturday, 11 October 2025, at about 3.15pm, in Judo Street, Beacon Valley, and upon arrival on the scene they found a 18-year-old male who sustained gunshot wounds to his body.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“According to reports the victim was approached by armed suspects who shot him before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be established.”

Portland High School took to their Facebook page to extend their condolences to the learner as the comments section was flooded with heartfelt messages, with the matric exams around the corner.

The post read: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, his friends and the broader school community. We have lost one of the sons of Portland High. We are saddened by the fact that we live in a community where none of our children are safe.

His teacher Andre Rix said Muizz was like a son to him.

The heartbroken onnie added: “I took him as my own son. He loved sir. And sir loved him back. Had the utmost respect for sir. He would wait in front of my class every morning for a hug.”

Mitchells Plain was under siege over the weekend as reports of gunfire and murders were reported in various parts of the community.

Chairperson of the Mitchells Plain Community Police Forum, Norman Jantjies said that there seems to be no end in sight to the gun violence.

He added: “To us, it appears that he was targeted. There have been a lot of shootings in Mitchells Plain. The situation has not improved despite there being increased visibility from police, but the shootings are a regular occurrence.

“So the community can’t see the difference because the shootings are going on unabated. The shootings have been coming on for months now and there is no end in sight.

“The government needs to fast track the intervention plan and there should be a special gang operation team in Mitchells Plain consisting of a prosecutor under the leadership of the NPA as well as experienced detectives and other entities like Metro Police that is just going to focus on gang-related incidents because that is missing in Mitchells Plain.”

Police are appealing to anyone with any information about this shooting incident to kindly contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.
