Prasa confirm Strand to Cape Town delay was due to accident

Train operations had to be temporarily suspended after a man was tragically struck and killed by a train on Monday morning.

The train was on route from Strand to Cape Town when the man was hit along the railway line in Strand near School Street.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.

Western Cape spokesperson for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) Zino Mihi confirmed that the matter is under investigation however speculations cannot be made yet if the cause of death is due to suicide.

Mihi explained: “PRASA in the Western Cape can confirm that an unfortunate incident took place earlier today, in which a male individual was struck by a train.

"The matter has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who have opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"At this stage, the region cannot confirm the cause of death or speculate on the circumstances, as this forms part of the official SAPS investigation. The train involved was en route from Strand to Cape Town at the time of the incident.

Train operations were temporarily suspended while emergency and law-enforcement services attended to the scene, and normal services have since resumed.

PRASA extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased."

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk told the Daily Voice that an inquest was opened after the incident.
