A SEAWINDS family is calling for justice after a mother of one was shot and killed in her sleep by a stray bullet to the head.

Cherylene Wilson, 23, was struck when a shooting took place outside the family’s wendy house in St Robert Road on 19 September. Her 16-year-old boetie was shot in the leg while both of them were in bed.

Sister Tony Wilson explained that they are unhappy with the South African Police Service (SAPS) as no arrests have been made as yet.

Tony told the Daily Voice: “The shooting took place before midnight. I was still awake, waiting with my mother for her boyfriend to get back home.

“He normally comes home at 11.30pm but that night he was a bit late and just before he came we heard gunshots going off. My brother and sister were in bed asleep.

“My brother and sister started crying and when my mother went to check she found out that my brother was shot and wounded in the leg.

“While we were assisting my brother, we heard my sister crying and when I went to check on her, I could not see anything until I turned her [over] and saw the hole in her head.

“Five shots hit the wendy house, one bullet hit each of my siblings and the other three ended up inside the house.

“We ran outside and managed to flag down a law enforcement vehicle that was in the area and they called the ambulance.

“They rushed her straight to Groote Schuur Hospital and my brother to Retreat Hospital. About an hour later, the whole family was called in when they declared that my sister passed away.”

Tony said that her sister has a 10-year-old daughter, who is in counselling, and the whole family is struggling to cope with the loss.

She added: “My family is not coping. I wish we could turn back time and tell her to stay awake with us and not go to sleep. Police say they are investigating, but that is what they say with all the shootings. We just want to know who did this to my sister and arrest whoever is responsible for her death.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Muizenberg police registered murder and attempted murder cases.

Cops are appealing to anyone with any information about this shooting incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.
