Reliable internet is a human right, not a luxury

Less than 15% of South Africans have uncapped internet. That number isn’t just a stat, it’s a line between those who can learn, work and connect, and those who can’t.

If we’re serious about closing the economic gap in South Africa, affordable, reliable internet has to be part of everyday life for all our people, not a luxury for the few.

For millions of South Africans living in aspirational communities, reliable connectivity remains out of reach, cutting them out of job opportunities, education and access to the digital economy. This digital divide doesn’t just limit access to information, it limits access to opportunities.

Patricia’s story shows what’s possible

In Site C, Khayelitsha, Patricia once had to choose between buying data or paying her bills. The cost of getting online could swallow a quarter of her income. With affordable home internet, those choices are eased. Today her daughter is a qualified nurse. That’s what a steady connection can do. It opens doors to study materials, job portals, and a world of opportunity.

Patricia’s story is what inspired the launch of TooMuchWifi in 2016. The company’s mission is to bridge the connectivity gap and bring affordable, reliable internet to aspirational communities across Africa.

Since switching on its first customers in 2016, TooMuchWifi has grown to over 80 communities, employing over 400 people and connecting more than a million South Africans.

“If you can’t get online, you can’t keep up. With school, job applications, or running your own business. Affordable, reliable internet gives people a fair shot. It’s how we unlock the potential we have in our communities,” says Tauriq Brown, CEO of TooMuchWifi.

The model is simple. Keep prices fair, keep the service fast and high-quality, and put money and jobs back into the neighbourhoods it serves.

This is what makes TooMuchWifi unique. The company invests more than 30% of its revenue back into the communities by hiring locally and supporting various initiatives from early childhood education centres, to neighbourhood watches, and nutrition programmes.
