WESTERN Province rookie Luke Burger says the Kaapse span want to fight fire with fire when they tackle a fast-paced Lions team in Saturday’s second round match of the Currie Cup Premier Division in Johannesburg.

According to Burger, Province won’t be afraid of throwing the ball around at altitude at Ellis Park, against a Lions team they are expecting to do the same. Especially after the Joburg side blew away the Sharks 46-5 last weekend.

Burger, who last season made his WP debut as an outside back, has been shifted to outside centre, after playing his first competitive game in the 48-23 loss to the Bulls at Cape Town Stadium last week.

The son of WP legend Kobus Burger wysed: “I have played a bit of inside centre for UCT (Ikey Tigers) and I like a challenge and experiencing new things. Each position has slightly different roles, and I think it will be really beneficial to play in different roles. It helps me understand what the other guys want from my side.”

Of getting the opportunity to combine with centre partner Damian Markus for the Lions clash, Burger added: “We have a really good relationship. Obviously, there’s room to improve, feeling comfortable with each other and knowing each other’s strengths...

“I think we’re feeling quite comfortable and feeling quite strong going forward.”
