PAUL de Villiers says he is ready to fill the big shoes of injured Stormers baljagter Deon Fourie as he aims to play another crucial role in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship game against Zebre in Parma.
De Villiers, a former Junior Springbok captain, has featured in all three of the Stormers’ URC wins so far, making a groot impact with his ability to grab the opposition’s ball at the breakdowns.
He has also become a go-to guy for the Kaapse span when it comes to scoring tries off the back of powerful lineout mauls.
But with veteran loosie Fourie possibly out for the rest of the season after tearing a bicep muscle last week, De Villiers knows his role within the squad as a breakdown threat has become even more vital.
Of losing Fourie, who has been a mentor of sort for the rising Stormers star, De Villiers said: “I am very sad about Deon. He obviously contributes hugely to our team on and off the pitch.
“I always ask him for advice and he is someone that we are definitely going to miss out there on the field.”
Looking to fill Fourie’s boots he added: “For me, it will just be to keep on doing what I am currently doing by making an impact at the breakdowns and on defence.
“Our defence is something that we pride ourselves on and my job of slowing down ball is something that contributes to that in a major way.
“Any player loves to get the backing of his coaches. It is one of those things that assists you in becoming even better.
“This is an opportunity for me to bring my strengths to the game – not in an arrogant way – but something that the team can’t go without on the playing field.”
