STELLENBOSCH leftback Fawaaz Basadien will be the main ou for Bafana Bafana when they tackle Tanzania in an international friendly at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight at 7.30pm.

The 28-year-old, who also won the Stellies Player of the Season award recently, is hot property and wanted by South Africa’s other top clubs.

For now, though, he is getting ready to lead his country for the first time, after making his international debut in November last year.

With his big guns not playing in this match, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was quoted by Sportswire website as saying in yesterday’s pre-match press conference: “First of all, I have to say that Fawaaz will be our captain on Friday.”

The Belgian, who announced earlier in the week that he will hang up his coaching boots at the end of next year’s World Cup, explains his decision as followes: “I want to give playing time to everyone, and then you have to look a little bit at who I have to put in the team. You can’t put all the youngsters in one team; you have to try to have some balance in your team. With the team that will play on Friday, Fawaaz is one of the oldest players. So, the choice was made very quickly.”

Regular captain Ronwen Williams is among the Sundowns players who were rested for this friendly and next week’s match against Mozambique.
