JAMIE Carragher has blasted Arne Slot’s Liverpool after their second consecutive defeat – a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The former Liverpool defender labelled the team “a mess” and said they no longer looked like a top span, pointing out serious defensive issues and a lack of balance in the squad.
Victor Osimhen’s first-half penalty secured Galatasaray’s win, though Liverpool could have lost by a wider margin.
The defeat followed a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend, casting doubt on Liverpool’s early-season form despite their position at the top of the Premier League standings.
Carragher said on CBS Sports: “I don’t feel like I am watching a top team. Liverpool aren’t playing football at the moment, they are playing basketball. It is just end to end and I don’t think top teams play like that.
“I expressed that to the manager early on, he’ll know that a lot better than me. He is obviously a fantastic manager. But right now Liverpool went from, I would call them a top team, workmanlike team last season and they have sprinkled a little bit of star dust on it terms of the transfers that they have brought in. And they haven’t gained anything going forward, but they have lost a lot defensively.
“I think for the manager now, last season was such a smooth ride for them, he has got to really earn his money.
“Right now it is a mess. It’s not the losses, it is not the defeats. This has been coming from day one.”
A key concern for Carragher is £116 million (R2.7 billion) signing Florian Wirtz. He echoed Wayne Rooney’s earlier criticism, saying Wirtz “isn’t at the races” and should be dropped to restore the team’s structure and confidence.
With Chelsea up next, Liverpool will be under pressure to regroup gou-gou.
