BAFANA Bafana are binne innie World Cup after beating Rwanda 3-0 on Tuesday, while Nigeria klapped Benin 4-0.
The results could not have gone better for South Africa, who trailed Benin by two points heading into the final round of the Group C qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
But after the 10 group games were played, it was Bafana who booked their place at the 2026 global showpiece, with Nigeria taking second place in the group.
After playing to a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe at the weekend, coach Hugo Broos’ span had to wys that they really wanted be at the World Cup.
And they did just that at Mbombela Stadium, with Oswin Appollis teeing up Thalente Mbatha to fire home a cracker from outside the box to announce that they were not there to play games.
That goal in the fifth minute set the tone for the rest of the encounter.
The gevaarlike Appollis dominated down the left flank and then scored a jitz goal of his own in the 26th minute. When that strike went in, South Africans knew, hier kom ‘n ding.
He again turned provider from a corner for Evidence Makgopa to head in the 73rd minute.
Meanwhile, Nigeria did SA ‘n groot favour at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in a match played at the same time.
Benin simply had to win to make it to the finals, but Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen wou niks weet nie and struck a hat-trick for his country on the evening.
The 4-0 result means the Super Eagles finished in second place in the group with Benin in third.
