PREMIER League champions Liverpool were stunned 2-1 by their arch-rivals Manchester United in a thrilling encounter at Anfield on Sunday.
Bryan Mbeumo scored as early as the 62nd second of the match to make it 1-0 for the Red Devils, before Cody Gakpo equalised for the Reds in the 78th minute.
But just as Liverpool fans thought they had snatched a point, Bruno Fernandes delivered a pint-point cross to find the head of Harry Maguire who made no mistake to make it 2-1 for United in the 84th minute.
The win lifts United to ninth place on the standings, with 13 points after eight games.
The defeat sees Liverpool drop to third on the log – four points behind table-topping Arsenal and one point behind Manchester City in second.
Despite Liverpool enjoying the bulk of the possession and the chances, United will feel that they deserved the win.
This after Mbeumo gave them the perfect start to the match, silencing the hostile home crowd early after he was expertly set up by a Amad Diallo’s through-ball.
The hosts tried hard to get the equaliser in the first half, with Gakpo hitting the upright with a curler in the 21st minute.
The Dutchman would eventually get his geluk in the 78th minute after Federico Chiesa – on for Alexander Isak – squared a ball for him to steer home.
But United had the laaste lag when Maguire guided home Fernandes’ cross to give United fans the bragging rights on Monday.
