MANCHESTER United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his span are “nowhere near” the required level after a damaging 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford.
Everton, 11th on the Premier League log, played more than 75 minutes with a numerical disadvantage after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for klapping his own teammate, Michael Keane, in a bizarre incident on Monday.
Despite facing opponents who have managed only one away Premier League win all season, United, in 10th, failed to break them down after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s 29th minute strike.
The loss marked a historic low: it was the first time United were beaten at home in the Premier League by a team reduced to 10 manne.
The result also gave David Moyes his first victory at Old Trafford as an opposing manager at the 18th attempt, adding to United’s humiliation.
For Amorim, who recently reached his one-year anniversary in charge, the performance was a stark reminder of how far the club still has to go.
Amorim wysed: “We have a lot to do. We have to be perfect to win games, we were not perfect.
“When we see the results of the weekend, we should get onto the pitch with a different excitement. Old Trafford was there saying ‘we are all here for a big step up’. And we were not ready.
“These five weeks, everyone is praising our evolution. But I’m always saying the same things: we are nowhere near the moment we are meant to be in this club.”
Reflecting on Gueye’s red card, he remarked that the combative energy shown in Everton’s internal clash was something he wished he had seen from his own players.
Amorim added: “Fighting is not a bad thing. Fighting doesn’t mean you don’t like each other. Fighting means you lose the ball and I will fight you because we will suffer a goal.”
