THE Toffees are seeing red after Everton lost 2-1 to Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring with a neat scoop-chip in the 10th minute, before the Dutchman turned provider to tee up Hugo Ekitike in the 29th minute.
Idrissa Gueye pulled one back for the Toffees in the 58th minute, but they were left frustrated by the amount of stoppage time added at the end of the game as they pushed for an equaliser.
On top of this, referee Darren England booked Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for taking a quick free-kick. And that really got under the skins of the Toffees.
Everton coach David Moyes wysed after the match: “Three minutes was very strange. Every quick free-kick had to be stopped and brought back for the whistle and then we get a booking for it. I find it quite unbelievable.”
Jack Grealish was booked by England after full time for taking his complaints to the referee. Grealish told TNT Sports: “We couldn’t get the last goal and it was frustrating in the second half.
“They were trying to slow the game down at times. I’ve never seen a player in my whole life get booked for taking a quick free-kick. I don’t know where that rule has come in. Even the stoppage time, three minutes and one minute – I’ve never seen that in the Premier League in the last two or three years.”
Liverpool baas Arne Slot praised another show of mental strength that helped extend the champions’ perfect league start and maintain their stranglehold of the Merseyside derby.
Slot said: “We ran out of a bit of energy, but we didn’t run out of mentality.”
