A team of Cape Town domino players have set their sights on a World Championship happening in Canada early next year.
The Izrah Domino Club was established nearly three decades ago, with members from across the Cape Flats.
The 25-year-old club was previously known as Campwell and based in Lansdowne.
The chairman of the Western Cape Domino Union (WCDU) and Izrah Domino Club, Ismail Raja, says they need about R400 000 to take their 18 players to the championship.
Rajah, 66, says his team has been undefeated and they are looking forward to representing South Africa at the international tournament
Their ages range from 28 to 71, they practice twice a week with weekly tournaments attended by family, friends and other interested parties.
Rajah says they have honed their skills and are teaching kids to play the game so that it doesn’t go extinct.
“Dominoes is a community game. As a young man, my family played the game and I have been playing professionally for about 30 years.
“Our team is amazing and talented and also, it allows us to spend time with our families.”
He says the team heading for Canada will be going up against the world’s best players, but feels good about their chances.
“Our team is on a winning streak,” he says.
“We are currently busy with fundraising events and are very excited for this opportunity.
“Our club is at St. Giles Hall in Mowbray and we welcome anyone to join, watch and assist us to reach our goal.”
