A Cape Flats dance crew has the opportunity to represent the country at the 2020 International Hip Hop Dance Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, in the US.
Ringleaders, a seven member group hailing from Grassy Park, Philippi, Constantia and Parow, need R224 000 (R32 000 per member) to bring home the gold.
Clayton le Roux, 16, Amy Langeveldt, 18, Caitlyn Trethewey, 19, Caitlyn Jane Beasley, 18, Neo Beasley, 20, Mathew Hendricks, 16, Cindy Hendricks, 19, won gold at the SA Hip Hop competition in December.
The crew, along with their coach, Corinne de Beer, are now ready to dance their way to the top of the table.
It will not be their first international competition as the crew, established in 2015, came 9th in the Hip Hop Unite World competition in Europe in 2016.
“I have seen the children grow over their years with these experiences. They became better dancers and better people,” Corinne says.
“Their perspectives are opened and they are pushed to be their best. Having an opportunity to like this to put South Africa on the map in the dance industry in the States is amazing and once in a lifetime.”
The team, who rehearses four to five times a week, will be up against 4 000 other dancers from 55 countries.
“We are excited to work hard again and go there with the best we have to offer, putting South Africa on the map where we can,” she adds.
