YOUTUBER and livestream sensation IShowSpeed made the Mother City mal when he made a Kaapse draai over New Year.
The 20-year-old internet personality, whose regte naam is Darren Jason Watkins Jr, touched down in Cape Town as part of his ambitious “Speed Does Africa” tour, a 28-day livestream journey across 20 African countries. He was welcomed to the Mother City by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Sharing a video of their thrilling interaction Hill-Lewis took to Instagram and said, “IShowSpeed, welcome to Cape Town.”
Speed went live in the New Year from one of Kaap’s most iconic locations, drawing thousands of viewers from across the globe as fans tuned in to celebrate the countdown with him in real time.
During the livestream, he was seen wearing a Springbok rugby jersey, a gesture that quickly resonated with SA viewers and was widely praised on social media.
Since his arrival, Speed’s South African experience has dominated online platforms, with clips of his adventures rapidly circulating on social media.
His activities have included shark cage diving, exploring Cape Town’s streets, attempting to speak local languages and interacting with residents.
He has also visited cultural and educational landmarks such as the Guga S’Thebe Cultural Centre in Langa and Rondebosch Boys’ High School. In addition, Speed tried some local cuisine, including koeksisters, got a haircut, and even took part in a casual rugby game, further immersing himself in South African culture.
Known for his high-energy livestreams and charismatic personality, IShowSpeed has built a massive global following, hitting 47 million followers during his visit.
The “Speed Does Africa” tour is scheduled to run until 26 January, with the streamer visiting almost one country per day as he continues to showcase the continent to his worldwide audience.

Dressed in a stylish short denim jumpsuit and adorned with Bantu knots, Tyla captured the essence of the celebration.
She shared videos on her Instagram stories, counting down to the New Year with her friends, and even posted a stunning picture showcasing the breathtaking view of Table Mountain from Camps Bay.
