DAWSON’S Creek fans have been left shattered following the news of US actor James Van Der Beek's death on Wednesday at age 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer.

The actor first shared news of his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, when he explained that he was "taking steps to resolve it".

Kimberly Van Der Beek, his wife, said on Instagram: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning.

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.

“Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Colorectal cancer develops in either the rectum or the colon.

Speaking to People Magazine last year, the Varsity Blues star revealed he had been “privately dealing with the diagnosis” and has reassured fans he is making the necessary "steps to resolve it" and is feeling optimistic."

I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.

“There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good."He rose to fame as the titular heartthrob Dawson Leery in The WB's hit teen drama 'Dawson's Creek', which aired from 1998 to 2003.

Van Der Beek has also been on "Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23" (2012–2013), "CSI: Cyber" (2015–2016), and "Pose" (2018). He recently appeared in the Amazon Prime TV series Overcompensating (2024).

Tributes have begun pouring in for the actor.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star and fellow 90s darling Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote on Instagram: “I’m so sad for your beautiful family.

“While James’ legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world.”

Dawson’s Creek recurring actor and Lone Tree Hill star Chad Michael Murray has also heaped praise on James, and has expressed sympathy for the TV star's family.

He wrote: “Sending love and light to your beautiful family. James was a giant. We’re so so so sorry for what you’re going through. His words, art and humanity inspired all of us- he inspired us to be better in all ways. God bless you guys.”
