Hundreds of natural hair enthusiasts logged on as the Kroesrocks Hookup went online for the first time on Saturday.
Simone Thomas from KroesRocks hosted the event at Infinity Studios in Paarden Eiland for 50 people and also broadcast the show live on the KroesRocks Facebook page.
Marketing guru Simone says: “The reach on Facebook for the online broadcast is more than 12 000 and it’s still growing.
“It is the first time doing it online. So, with Covid-19 and especially when I heard of the president’s address last week, I thought we’d have to cancel the live audience.”
Simone, 31, and her guests tackled the recent Clicks advertising saga in which afro hair was labelled as “dry, dull and damaged”, compared with images of straight blonde hair, which was labelled “normal” and “fine and flat”.
“We aren’t attacking the local retailer, but this event allows us to put this issue to bed once and for all,” says Simone.
“Let us just rub that last ointment on the wound and then we can move on.”

She was joined by the international marketing manager for Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils Africa, Amanda Carpede, and Grant Heynes, a strategic entrepreneur in textured hair brands, to discuss the politics of natural hair.
Simone said she roped in the help of Penny Lane Studios staff to assist with staging the show.
The ladies were treated to kwaai haircare tips and a goodie bag propvol hair products.
Guest Chrislyn Sias said: “I love a goodie bag and this one was quite something, especially because it contained lekker flexi rods as well.
“There were different stalls where you could get some more info on products and just advice on maintaining your hair in general.”
Singers Robin Pieters and Zeldene McDonald entertained the audience with a live band.
