Mujahid George is fast becoming one of the biggest local brands on the Cape Town entertainment scene.
For years he has been wowing audiences with his powerful vocals, particularly with his rendition of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best, which has become his trademark song.
It is easy for people to believe that whatever this admirable singer has achieved in his music career is solely because of his natural talent, but this is not the case.
Besides his talent, the 30-year-old has a strong work ethic that has pushed him to where he is today.
Things started taking off in 2017 when he played at GrandWest for the first time under the Marmalade Promotions umbrella as one of the opening acts for All-4-One, and his performance left audiences in complete awe.
He represented Cape Town with dignity and delivered a memorable performance.
As an entertainer, I know Cape Town has a small entertainment pool and one really has to open yourself up to new things all the time and evolve.
Being just a singer is simply not enough, which is why we’ve seen so many great singers come and go over the years.
Having staying power takes a lot of courage and hard work.
This industry asks to not only be able to sing, or act or dance; one has to be versatile and multi-skilled, and be able to shine at all times.
This is exactly where Mujahid is in his career right now; he is moving out of his comfort zone and on to new challenges and perhaps greater things.
His latest project is a TV show called The Boy from Bo-Kaap, a lifestyle show focusing on sport, entertainment, cuisine and fashion.
The show will provide a platform for rising stars to showcase their talent and share their stories with the rest of SA.
In addition, Mujahid will showcase our local stars and legends, paying tribute to their legacies.
He says it is important for him to celebrate other artists’ achievements as this helps him grow as well.
The corporate world has also now picked up on Mujahid and he has been sponsored with a car from Market Toyota Athlone.
Mujahid didn’t want to divulge too much about the show but said all will be revealed soon.
It’s always been a dream of his to have his own television show because the artists he looked up to have all managed to build their brands on a television platform.
This industry is all about breaking the next glass ceiling, says Mujahid, and he believes this venture will catapult his career to the next level.
He is one of those singers who performs from his heart, explaining: “I feel blessed to be able to give back selflessly to my community because of where I am in my career now. Cape Town has been good to me.”
Every artist needs a person to help keep them sane and for Mujahid, this person is his wife who he says is a pillar of strength.
“As serious as I am about my career, I am a family man first,” he says, so if he has a choice between doing a gig or spending time with his family, then the gig will have to wait.
Luckily for Mujahid, he is at a point in his career where he no longer carries the stress of where the next gig is going to come from.
That’s because the corporate sector has accepted him wholeheartedly and is keeping him busy. This is the point where being an entertainer becomes easier.
So slamat, Mujahid, on this new venture of yours. May the TV show be a huge success and may there be many seasons to come.
