ALL SMILES: Leroy with his coaching partner Adriano

A former soccer player from Bishop Lavis has landed a top coaching position on the other side of the world - in Finland.

Leroy Maluka has been appointed the assistant coach of Football Club International Turku, commonly known as Inter Turku, in Veikkausliiga (Finnish Premier League).

“It is an exciting journey for me, I am looking forward to learning and contributing to the game on this side,” says the 35-year-old.

Leroy’s journey began with a visit to his brother a decade ago.

He was playing for Ikapa Sporting at the time and went to Finland for holidays.

To keep fit, he asked to train with Åbo IFK, who were impressed with his skills and offered him a contract.

Within six months, he joined top Finnish side Turun Palloseura, where he played for two seasons before returning to Åbo IFK.

“I think I made an impression, football here is different compared to back home. The league here is more physical and technical,” he says.

WIN: Leroy with a trophy

The midfielder won numerous awards in his decade-long career in Finland.

He now holds a UEFA B coaching licence, adding: “I am also a physical trainer and will be graduating in December with a diploma in fitness and exercise.”

Leroy attended school at Greenlands Primary then St Andrews Technical School.

He says all his achievements would not be possible without the support of his family.

“I would like to thank my dad who always made sure I get the best training as a kid, and raising me well together with my late mother,” says Leroy.

A BALL OF A TIME: The 35-year-old in action

“Thank you to my brothers and sister in Cape Town. Thank you to my big brother Mustafa Maluka and his family.”

Leroy does see himself returning to the country if a coaching opportunity becomes available.

His father Dennis, also a former player, says he is excited about his son’s new role: “I am excited for him, he has been working hard. I have never doubted his ability to play because he is very skillful with the ball and committed,” says the proud dad.

The Finnish league is set to start next month.
