Two Liesbeeck Primary teachers will run a 21km half marathon, on Saturday to raise funds for the school to get a new water pump for their borehole.
Principal Wahied Gasant and teacher Irfaan Abrahams will begin their run at 7.30am in eight loops from the school down roads such as Merrydale, Limpopo and Morgenster in Mitchells Plain before ending back at the school.
The new water pump will help the school keep their garden club going which was started by Irfaan.
Wahied said: “We are not allowed to use municipal water for the garden club and there is something wrong with the borehole. Mr Abrahams came to me and said that he was going to raise R30 000 for a new pump by running so I told him that I will join him in a 21km run.”
The 53-year-old principal added that he last ran about 30 years ago and that he is nervous about Saturday’s event but at the same time he is determined to make his pupils proud.
“Not only do I want to raise money for the water pump but I also want to show my pupils and the community that if you believe in yourself then you can achieve anything, no matter what position you are in. I want to promote self-belief in all of them and show them that my body will follow my mind. Also, this is not just a run around the community but it is actually a race and I aim to win.”
To hype him up before the run, Wahied said that the entire school will be present at the start of the race and that before they set off, Irfaan will have classic sport soundtrack Chariots of Fire playing while Wahied will have Rocky Balboa’s theme song Eye of the Tiger booming from the speakers.
Donors can contribute R5 for every 1km and those wishing to help the school can call Rayana Emandien on 021 371 5190.
