The boeber boeta has done it again!

When boeber aand hits Cape Town, Irfaan Abrahams believes everyone must get a koppie boeber, whether you’re a fasting Muslim or a homeless person living in the city.

To mark the 15th day of Ramadaan on Wednesday, Irfaan and the team of runners from Lace Up in Mitchells Plain served kos and boeber to homeless people in Wynberg and the Cape Town CBD.

Lace Up served 300 litres of boeber, sandwiches, akhni and fruit to arme mense living in tents, wooden shacks and on the streets.

Irfaan, who is the vice-chairman of Lace Up, says: “We started at the mosque in Wynberg where people have been living on the field next door in shacks before we went to Cape Town Train Station and gave to the people living along the train line.

“Afterwards we went to the people living by the Sea Point Police Station, Trafalgar high and by the MyCiTi terminus close to Cape Town Stadium.”

Irfaan, who is also a teacher at Liesbeeck Primary in Mitchells Plain, says Lace Up has been around for over five years and that the group also feeds homeless people in settlements near Strandfontein and New Horizon.

“We have been serving people food for years now and it was so heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces (on Wednesday night).

FOOD FOR ALL: Mense enjoying lekker warme boeber

“When I come to the sites, then they shout, ‘hier kom die boeta met die kos’.

“One of them, Boeta Ganief (Davids), who we have been serving regularly was overcome with joy when we brought him the boeber last night.

“He told me that he was pleased to see that people are still following the traditions of Ramadaan.”

GIVING: Fruit served to individuals

Irfaan says they have more feeding initiatives planned in several areas.

“There are so many places where people are living poorly and we just want to help them and show that there are people out there who care.

“We are so grateful for everybody who has helped us and we cannot be more grateful for our private donor who gives us all of the dry spices we use for free.”
