BEHIND THE SCENES: Christo, actors

Actor Christo Davids is spreading his wings behind the scenes.

Christo is the director and head writer of the latest instalment of the popular kykNET series Spoorloos.

The 37-year-old was only a pikkie when he first graced our screens in the iconic soapie Onder Engele in the late 90s.

He tells the Daily Voice: “I started my career when I was 11 years old, alongside my grandfather Goliath Davids, Denise Newman, Cedwyn Joel and June van Merch in Onder Engele on TV1, that’s what they called the SABC1 channel at that time.”

Christo is known for his role as Errol in 7de Laan, but in the last couple of years, he started making a name as a director and playwright, with award-winning stage productions such as Queenie-hulle.

NEW JOURNEY: Director Christo Davids

“Producer Ilse van Hemert approached me three years ago to write and direct Spoorloos Steynhof,” he says.

“It’s been a long road and I’m grateful for the guidance I received from Ilse. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for her faith and belief that I am capable of doing something like this.”

The new series tells the story of a baby who disappears from a farm in the Northern Cape.

Two people are found dead but there is no trace of the baby or her carer, Lien.

Fifteen years later her family receives good news: she has been found.

Enter 15-year-old Adri van Tonder who realises that there is no record of her birth.

With the help of her friend Xander, she soon finds herself on a farm in the Northern Cape but realises not everybody wants her to find out the truth.

“Like the saying goes: ‘the truth will set you free’. In this case it is not true,” adds Christo.

The stellar cast of Spoorloos: Steynhof includes Stiaan Smith, Diaan Lawrenson, and Vinette Ebrahim.

Catch it every Tuesday at 8pm on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
