SELF-ACCEPTANCE: 29-year-old author of Skeef, Renaldo Schwarp

A Cape Town man has written a book sharing “practical advice and anecdotes on all aspects of being gay”.

Renaldo Schwarp published his first book called SKEEF, which deals with the South African gay experience in his characteristic witty tone.

He also consults celebrities such as Rian van Heerden, Marc Lottering, Marco Spaumer and Joe Foster to paint a nuanced picture of contemporary gayness.

The book follows his documentary film of the same title.

It focuses on the world of LGBTIQ+ South Africans, placing it in international and historical contexts.

The documentary is currently streaming on Showmax.

Schwarp is a well known radio host, TV personality, award-winning filmmaker and now he can add published author to his growing list of accomplishments.

“Though life is often more difficult for LGBTIQ people, SKEEF conveys a message of hope for gay people, our parents and friends. “We are entitled to self-acceptance, authenticity, healthy relationships and happiness,” he says.

No subject is taboo as the 29-year-old explores coming out, bullying, relationships, school days, varsity years, parents, representation, sex and religion.

“So much misogyny and homophobia have gone unchecked.

“I welcome the disruption, bravery and visibility that SKEEF provides with open arms.

“Strong and positive representation is crucial to eradicate stigma and break down stereotypes about our lived experiences.”

Marc, who is married to Anwar Lakay and whose dad is a Pinkster pastor, says: “I essentially spoke about the process of coming out within a conservative community.

“I told my story in the hope that others out there realise that they don't need to live their lives in shame. They are not alone.”

In a startlingly honest chapter, Schwarp’s mother Verenia, talks about the challenges of raising gay children.

The writer says: “This book doesn’t just cater to people who identify as LGBTIQ+.

“This book equips allies, parents, friends and colleagues of queer people with a crucial framework and insight into the lived experiences of the community. ”

SKEEF is available at all bookstores and online at R195.
