First it was dop, then entjies and now mense suffering under the four-month long lockdown will have to give up their Chocolate Logs too.
Consumers were up in arms this week when Nestle confirmed they would no longer be making their popular choccie.
The world’s largest food company has said that it will discontinue production of Chocolate Log from August.
The wafer, marshmallow and chocolate treat has been around for more than 50 years, but now has to make way for newer replacements.
Aubergine Speciality Foods, the South African supplier, made the sad announcement on Facebook, saying: “It’s a tragic day, Nestle Chocolate Logs will cease production in South Africa! Such an iconic item. Production will be stopped in August of this year.”
Nestle confirmed the news with an official statement: “As Nestle, our purpose is to delight our consumers through tastier and healthier products.
“We know that one of the main drivers of the chocolate category is innovation and that consumers love new products.
“Taking this into consideration, we do discontinue certain products and introduce new ones to the market,” said spokesman Zweli Mnisi.
He says while mense are understandably disappointed, consumers can look forward to “a variety of delicious chocolates in the coming months”.
South Africans also had to say goodbye to at least two favourites over the past few years.
In 2017, Cadbury’s Tempo was replaced with its less-delicious cousin 5 Star.
Before that, Lay’s South Africa announced that it had discontinued its Salt & Vinegar flavour crisps.
Daily Voice readers took to social media to express their disappointment over Chocolate Log while Aubergine Speciality Foods even suggested petitioning Nestle to continue with production.
Facebook user Tania Roets wrote: “Why take away Chocolate Log? It was one of the most delicious chocolates around! There are so many to choose from to take away, now they must take Chocolate Log away. What a shame! Eish!”
Jonathan Ross even questioned whether the government is behind this latest blow, asking: “Who decided this? (Cogta Minister Nkosazana) Dlamini Zuma? Is this with immediate effect, or do we have time to stock up?”
This was said in reference to government announcing on Sunday that liquor sales would be banned with immediate effect.
Jamy-Lee Springbok summed it up for everyone: “Why?? OMW first it was my favourite Salt & Vinegar lays and now it’s my favourite chocolate. I simply cannot deal!”(sic)
