More than 100 seniors lined up for a Christmas lunch outside the home of Portlands ouma, Jasmina Williams, who served up a larney menu for the golden oldies on Thursday.
Aunty Mina, as she is known, and seven helpers cooked up a storm in the morning to be ready for lunch at 1pm.
The lunch consisted of roast chicken, potato, yellow rice and bean salad.
Wilhelmina Jacobs, 76, walks from Tafelsig every week to get kos from Aunty Mina’s feeding scheme and on Thursday she was in a cheerful mood as she got her foam bakkie filled with the scrumptious meal.
She said: “I am thankful for what Aunty Mina does for us as old people.
“I hope someone sees what she does and sponsors her.”
Aunty Mina said she loves investing in her community and appreciates the help from her friends.
“My family and friends are a huge support, they help me prepare the food and also plan meals for my weekly feeding scheme.
“I hope the old people had a blessed day with their meals and refreshments.”
There was also a long queue of kids who came to get a meal and a party packet.
“As you can see by the length of these lines today, there is a great need in our community and we hope to reach everyone,” adds Aunty Mina.
Meanwhile in Pelikan Park, patrollers handed out food parcels to the seniors and less fortunate.
Neighbourhood watch members collected food items so mense could cook Christmas lunch for their families on Saturday.
Treasurer Gayle Johnstone says: “There are a lot of people who don’t have anything in their cupboards, not even a teabag.
“And because the social grant will only be sent after Christmas, we thought we should give food parcels.
“Our members gave whatever they could give the people, and Aunty Zainu donated to us.”
The crime-fighters also handed out Santa shoeboxes filled with stationery.
Gayle says: “The aim was to give back and we are happy we had the opportunity to show the community that we are thinking of them.
