A 16-year-old boy from Manenberg appeared in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on murder charges for allegedly robbing and stabbing a man to death on Saturday night.
Manenberg Police Station commander, Brigadier Enolium Joseph, says the teen was caught after residents in Tambo Village piemped him to police.
He says shortly after 8 pm, a 39-year-old Malawian man was walking in Viva Street, Tambo Village when he was accosted by a group of teen skelms.
“Two of the teenagers approached the 39-year-old man thinking he had money and asked him for a R2,” says Joseph.
“They threatened him with a knife and demanded he hand over whatever cash he had, but when the foreign national said he did not have anything he was stabbed in the chest by the 16-year-old assailant.
Neighbours rushed the bleeding man to Heideveld Emergency Centre.
“Witnesses told officers where to find the suspect and officers searched the 16-year-old’s home in Oliver Tambo Avenue where they found him.
“He was arrested and charged with murder and armed robbery and will make his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
“The murder weapon was not recovered. His friend has now gone on the run and we are now appealing for help in locating the second suspect,” says Joseph.
Anyone with info about the second suspect can call Manenberg police on 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop 08600 10111.
