Kids at a popular karate dojo in Ottery are ready to kick butt in Europe, but need your help to get them there.
The fighters at Ashihara Karate Kai Kan South Africa have qualified to compete at the Style World Tournament Brasov, Romania, in November.
Though this is an exciting time for students and senseis, they have one problem - funding.
It’s going to cost an estimated R200 000 to get to Romania. The monies go towards flight tickets, accommodation, karate gear, and blazers for the team, which includes seven fighters, one sensei, one branch chief and a referee.
Sensei Malcolm Naude says they are hoping a sponsor will come forward.
“We have tried to get sponsorship from so many corporate companies, NPOs and even asked travel agencies to sponsor flight tickets for us, but nothing has come up,” he says.
“We would be putting this organisation on the map going to this international tournament. Our fighters have a 50-60 percent ratio of wins in all tournaments they participate in.”
Lee Arendse, 16, a black belt for six years, took up karate after being bullied at school. He is holding both thumbs for a sponsor.
“I’m so happy about this opportunity. It will be the first time to travel abroad and compete in a world tournament. I see myself winning four of my fights. This will also give me a break from school,” Lee jokes.
