Police are investigating a shooting that took place in Hanover Park on Friday night which left one man dead and two men injured.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said: “Philippi Police are investigating a murder and two attempted murder cases after a shooting incident at a flat in Halmans Walk, where a 36-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded and two others injured.”
He says no arrests have been made and police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting which residents believe is gang-related.
A female resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I know the one who died is a gangster but the other two are not.
“They sometimes lam outside with the guys but they don’t do anything bad.
“There is a gang war going on in the area, so there is shooting all the time but this geskietery and fighting must just stop because innocent people are being hurt.”
When the Daily Voice spoke to other residents in the area, they added that they are often disturbed by the sound of gunshots, while parents are fearful that their children may be caught in the crossfire or become victims of gang initiations.
“At night, you just hear shots going off and then we must hear in the morning that more people are dead or injured,” a resident said.
“There are people that patrol in the area a lot but there are just too many shootings that they also feel unsafe so they risk their lives for nonsense.
“I lost track of all the names of the gangs because it does not matter to me, but what I do care about is the safety of my children and the others that live here.”
