DRUK DAAI NOMMER: Free rides for Bontas mense who need it most DRUK DAAI NOMMER: Free rides for Bontas mense who need it most

Taxi drivers might have a bad rep when it comes to their driving, but the Bonteheuwel Taxi Association (BTA) is trying to turn that image around.

In a selfless gesture, minibus drivers have decided that from today onwards, each and every pensioner and disabled person in Bonteheuwel will be able to ride for mahala.

BTA chairman Moegamad Basheer Finnies said Bontas residents do so much to support their business, that he felt it was time they started giving back to the community.

“I have had my taxi business in Bonteheuwel for many years and always see seniors and disabled people struggling to get to where they want to be, or I hear that people are asking around for lifts to their seniors clubs or the disabled groups,” he says.

“These people are the cornerstone of our society — our parents and grandparents, those in need of special care. And now they are all welcome to free taxi rides within Bonteheuwel.

“If you are going to a shop in the area, the swimming pool or just have an appointment at the hospital, call the number on the card provided to you and we will send out a driver to assist you to get to where you need to be.”

First in line was 50-year-old paraplegic Adnaan de Bruin, who is always ready to crack a joke about his disability.

Yesterday, Adnaan, who lost his feet in an accident years ago, jokingly reminded Daily Voice that they owed him a paar tekkies.

He welcomed BTA’s act of charity: “I appreciate that it won’t be a hassle to come to the disabled club anymore. We are grateful to the BTA for their services.”

Mishka Harvey, 25, who is deaf and mute, expressed her thank you with a bright smile, signalling in sign language: “Thank you, BTA. I don’t have to walk so far anymore.”

Pensioners and disabled people are reminded to collect their tickets from the BTA offices situated at the Bonteheuwel Thusong Centre, on the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Elder Street.

Meanwhile, the BTA is also looking for drivers with PDP licences. For enquiries
