Metrorail said both lines to Simon’s Town have been reopened following the collision at a level crossing near the False Bay station.
A train leaving the station about 6.30am crashed into a Toyota Corolla on Albertyn Way.
The train smashed into the passenger side of the vehicle, which was not heavily damaged.
According to police there were no fatalities and the male driver’s injuries were minor.
The crash caused a delay of about an hour before full service was restored around 2pm.
Metrorail spokesperson Rihana Scott said: “We were able to open the lines, but we are warning people of sand that might continue to affect the service to Simon’s Town.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the incident.
She said their office “can confirm that an accident occurred at Lakeside railway and False Bay railway this morning [yesterday] at 6.25am. The driver sustained minor injuries”. she said.
