A Pregnant woman was shot and several bags of money stolen in a daring cash-in-transit heist on the Cape Flats on Tuesday.
Traffic came to a standstill on Voortrekker Road as two suspects robbed a Fidelity cash van in Parow shortly before 8am.
Police confirmed the suspects were dressed in the uniform of the security company and robbed the guards of an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspects fired shots at the guards, injuring a female pedestrian in the process.
Witnesses say the drama unfolded on the corner of Bedford and Voortrekker roads outside Net 1 Financial Services, where mense were queuing for their monthly social grant payouts. Sassa has confirmed their paypoint was not the target of the robbers and payouts continued as usual.
Jolandi Groenewald, 23, from Parow says she was standing outside the day hospital when shots rang out.
“Myself and my fiancée were standing outside the day hospital since 7.20am with other patients because the electricity was off inside.
“We heard two shots and then everyone ran for cover; there were more shots after that.
“It was scary and it was raining hard at the time,” she says.
“We also heard of a grey VW Jetta that was stolen at the Pick 'n Pay after the shots went off.
Fidelity Toyota Hilux van was shot through and a woman was screaming ‘please help me’.”
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says the woman was found on the side of the road.
“Paramedics assessed the woman and found that she had sustained a gunshot wound to her chest, leaving her in a serious condition. The woman was also found to be pregnant,” says Meiring.
“Once treated, the patient was transported to Tygerberg Hospital for further care.”
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut says the cash-in-transit
security officers were ambushed by two suspects.
“Several shots were fired by the suspects and in the process a female pedestrian was wounded and admitted to hospital.
“The circumstances are being investigated and finer aspects of the case cannot be disclosed at this stage.
“It can, however, be confirmed that the suspects wore uniforms of a security company. The cash-in-transit security officers were not injured.”
