FED-UP: Blocked drain FED-UP: Blocked drain

Residents have complained that the overflowing poo pipes are making their children sick.

They said the problem has existed for years and blamed the City for not fixing it.

However, the City said on Wednesday there were no infrastructural problems causing blockages.

Instead it said residents themselves are to blame for the crappy problem.

Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayoral Committee Member for Area: Central, says: “All the reported sewer blockages in Dwyka Street from 1 July 2014 to date were caused by inappropriate objects being dumped illegally into the sewer system.

“We can confirm that there are no infrastructural defects shown as the causes of any of the blockages.

COMPLAIN: Plastic and tins in the drain

“Continual dumping of cooking oils, building rubble, rags and paper is responsible for most of the blockages in this area.”

But an angry Colleen Nel, whose six-year-old son was admitted to hospital with gastro, says it’s time the City upgraded infrastructure in Dwyka Street: “We are fed-up that the council never gets a solution even though it’s had been happening for 16 years now.

“The council is referring to the blocked stormwater drains with the papers, not the sewerage drains that is in the dead centre in front of our house. The two drains are not connected in anyway. This is bulls***,” she said.

The City urged mense to piemp illegal dumpers: “They should please report any transgressions to the City on 0860 103 089, via email to [email protected], via SMS to 31373, or WhatsApp to 063 407 3699.”
