We bet this Karate Kid’s previous bullies would not mess with him now.
Ten-year-old Giovano Solomons is klein maar hy is reg ge-train.
The Grade 5 Surrey Primary School pupil will be representing South Africa next month at the Goju Ryu World Championships, in Romania.
Having participated in multiple competitions since the tender age of seven, Giovano says that this competition will be his biggest one yet.
The 10-year-old participated in the Gladiator competition in Bellville on Saturday, bringing home a gold medal.
“I’m very nervous and excited at the same time. This is my biggest competition so far,” said a shy Giovano of his upcoming trip, where he and 15 other kids from his dojo will be representing South Africa.
He adds: “Karate helps me with discipline and self-defence (as) I was bullied at my previous school.”
The tiny dynamo trains three days a week and has to follow a healthy eating plan to stay in his under-40 kg weight class.
He says his karate idol is the legendary Jackie Chan and that his favourite movie is the rebooted 2010 version of Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith.
Giovano’s parents are excited that their son will be leaving the country for the first time. His biggest supporter is his mom, Claire.
“He is such a humble and quiet child, he is very motivated to do well. We like that karate has improved his confidence and we feel extremely proud of him,” she said.
Dad Chris Solomons says his son’s flight and accommodation is paid for, in part by Mayor Patricia de Lille: “We also want to take the opportunity to thank the mayor’s office and our ward councillor, who advised us when we asked for help and support.”
Giovano is a member of the Goshukan Karate Dojo in Athlone, operating at Surrey Primary School in Pluto Road.
Adeeb Fillies, his 4th dan Sensei, says: “He’s very skilled, he has a lot of natural ability; with the right kind of training and guidance he’ll excel.”
The family is now raising R3000 for Giovano’s equipment and gear (which has to be internationally approved) before he leaves for the world champs in Romania, taking place from 13-17 September.
Sensei Fillies says a few other children also still need equipment and gear.
