In October, Samantha Mulligan, Ivy Meyer, Marlene Cupido, Megan Moolman, Levona Johnson and Helga Martin will put their best foot forward at the 2017 Fisaf International World Fitness and Hip Hop Unite Championships.

The mommies, who are aged between 30 and 59, met at the Out of Africa Dance Academy run by Ivy, where they would meet several times a week to dance up a storm.

Ivy explains she started the group several years ago for moms who would spend hours waiting for their children who attend classes at the academy.

THAT’S HOW: Samantha Mulligan

These six ladies have been training together for a year now and in May they represented the academy at the Western Cape Hip Hop Unite provincial championships and won gold.

In July they competed in the national championships and got a lekker surprise when they took the top spot.

Johnson, a 45-year-old physiotherapist from Plumstead, says: “After the regionals, we were on such a high and it was a reflection of all the work (we put in). We never expected to win the national competition.”

The group’s oldest member is 59-year-old teacher Marlene Cupido from Lotus River who loves keeping fit.

INSTRUCTOR: Ivy Meyer

Ivy says the women also have to raise R25 000 each for the trip.

Megan Moolman from Ottery says it is not easy raising the funds. “Many people think because we are adults it is easy, but we are all working moms who have financial obligations.”

Ivy says the group is the first senior team from SA to qualify for the competition.

“The group can really be proud of their achievements and it is important for people to understand that these ladies have obtained national colours and will be representing their country.”
